FASHION REVIEW: Dw By Kanye West Fall/Winter 2012 Collection
What a difference a year makes! After his debut collection—officially called Dw (his late mother’s initials)—received harsh reviews last season, Kanye West returned to Paris Fashion Week once again to present his second ready-to-wear collection at La Halle Freyssinet. Famous faces in the front row included Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, André Leon Talley, Kim Kardashian, Wacka Flocka, Cassie & Diddy, Alicia Keys & Swizz Beatz, Common, Big Sean, Silvia Fendi, Giuseppe Zanotti, Riccardo Tisci, and Christopher Kane.
Inarguably much improved, the seemingly Givenchy-inspired Fall/Winter 2012 collection showcased 20 opulent looks which mainly consisted of soft black leather, velvet, and fur.
Accessories included crocodile skin chokers, fur backpacks, slouchy totes, mesh booties, and knee-high boots with ribbed straps.
Top models like Jourdan Dunn, Carmen Kass, Joan Smalls, and Anja Rubik sashayed down a runway made of dry ice wearing smudged eyeliner and slicked back hair, creating an edgy look.
This show was better than his previous effort and most of the pieces are wearable, particularly the jackets. The cut of certain garments betray the fact that he’s still new to this, but overall it was a strong second collection. I predict that his design aesthetic will only get better.
For the finale, go-karts went around a racetrack that encircled the runway before the designer took his bow.
Who Do I See Wearing This Collection: Anna Dello Russo, Rihanna, Ciara, Mary J. Blige, Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, and Cassie.
