The Loft Gala 2015

On Saturday night (May 9), the first annual Loft Gala took place at the opulent Hilton Lac-Leamy hotel located in Gatineau. With over 600 distinguished guests, this sold out event in support of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation was truly a night to remember! Entering the grand ballroom, fellow Avah Taylor blogger, Annette Ejiofor and I marveled at the sight of a stilt walker wearing metallic silver wings. In addition, there was a beauty bar and hashtag station where guests could print Instagram and Twitter photos with the #LoftGala hashtag in real time.

The man of the hour, Chair of the Loft Gala, Bruno Racine, delivered a heartwarming welcome speech and spoke about his goal to raise as much money possible annually in support of the Maplesoft Centre. The  centre is the first of its kind in Eastern Ontario and provides programs and services for cancer patients and their families.

CTV’s Sarah Freemark, one of the two emcees for the night, introduced guest speaker, singer and cancer survivor Jully Black who gave an impassioned speech urging us to join together in the fight against cancer. “I am you and you are me. We are more alike than we are different and this business of cancer..we need to shut this business down!,” said Black to thunderous applause. In closing, she gave a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace” that brought everyone to their feet.

The first live performance was by mezzo soprano Julie Nesrellah, accompanied by Juno nominated classical harpist Caroline Léonardelli. After dining on a four-course meal prepared by Casino du Lac-Leamy’s executive chef Denis Girard, we were transported into a “Haute World” with a fashion show by Canadian designer David McCaffrey.

Mezzo soprano Wallis Giunta gave a stellar performance while AMTI models walked the runway in stunning McCaffrey Haute Couture gowns. The collection was ethereal and romantic with a hint of drama, accentuated with custom accessories by Osolee jewelry.

For the finale, aerial silk dancers from Cirque Fantastic Concept left guests in awe of their aerial acrobatics. The night drew to a close when Heidy Laurysen of Laurysen Kitchens placed the winning bid of $11,000 on a trip to Costa Rica during the live auction. It goes without saying, the first Loft Gala was a huge success!
