VIDEO: 4 U.S. Marines Urinate On Dead Taliban Fighters
The extremely graphic video shows four U.S. Marines in full combat gear urinating on the bodies of three dead Taliban fighters. In the video, one of the men jokes: “Have a nice day buddy.” The Marines in question are believed to be from the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, which returned to its home base in North Carolina last fall after a tour in Afghanistan.
The footage prompted U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to order a full investigation. He said in a statement: “I have seen the footage, and I find the behavior depicted in it utterly deplorable. I condemn it in the strongest possible terms. Those found to have engaged in such conduct will be held accountable to the fullest extent.”
In a statement, Afghan President Hamid Karzai denounced the video. He said: “The government of Afghanistan is deeply disturbed by a video that shows American soldiers desecrating dead bodies of three Afghans.”
“This act by American soldiers is simply inhuman and condemnable in the strongest possible terms. We expressly ask the US government to urgently investigate the video and apply the most severe punishment to anyone found guilty in this crime.”
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the video was “absolutely inconsistent with the standards of behavior that the vast majority of Marines hold themselves to.”
Two of the four Marines that appear in the video have reportedly been identified by the U.S. Marine Corps. Meanwhile, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service is currently investigating the incident.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed said that the video would not disrupt peace talks with the US.
